There are around 250 species of bees in the UK with 90% of them being solitary. The remaining 10% are social bees that form colonies containing from a few hundred to over 50,000 individual bees. Inside a colony there is normally one fertile queen , a few fertile males, called drones, and many sterile workers.
The social bees consist of 25 species of Bumblebee and the Honey Bee.
Bees are important because they pollinate a wide variety of food crops, wildflowers and trees. It has been estimated that out of the foods we eat one in three needs bees for pollination. In addition, the biodiversity of our countryside relies on there being pollinators to set fruits and seeds for birds and other animals to eat. A wild flower meadow would not exist if there were no pollinators to fertilize the seed ready for the coming year.
It has been calculated that the Honey Bee contributes £16 million to the economy as a honey producer but more importantly an estimated £200 million as a pollinator.
So ALL bees are important as pollinators and the importance of Solitary, Bumble and Honey Bees to the British wildlife through pollination is impossible to quantify.

Welcome to the First Honey Co-operative which aims to help British Beekeepers to
produce and market their honey.
We are a non-profit making company supporting beekeepers in the UK.
British honey from our bees is produced in a sustainable way and our bees are managed
in a non-intensive way with minimal use of chemicals.
